Format of Emergency Exit Signs

Exit Sign Requirement in Industrial or Commercial Places

The layout design of emergency exit or fire exit signs are not fixed for all country, it may vary from country to country, and even in the same country, it varies from time to time.  Today we will introduce some most used formats of exit signs that you see everywhere.

In the older version, it was only wording, now using just a pictograph and arrow, the wording is optional. This is now an international format.
In any industrial or commercial place, you will find a requirement for an exit sign. The exit sign is the most essential part of any building and it will help to direct people toward the exits from the building. It plays a vital role in making sure that everyone gets out safely from the building in case of emergency.

The requirements for an exit sign include:

The size of the sign should be at least 3ft by 3ft. The size of the sign should be at least 6 inch high with white letters on blue background. The lettering should be large enough to be clearly visible even from far distances.

There should be at least two signs installed in each direction; one facing inwards and another facing outward.

The signs should be installed high enough so that they are easily visible even when they are not lit up.

They should have a minimum training period before they can be used as an actual exit sign because if there is any mistake made during this training period then it might lead to injuries or damage to property or life.

Exit Sign Symbol

You can define as- an exit sign as a device that denotes the location of the closest emergency exit in case of fire or another emergency in a public facility such as a building, aircraft or boat, etc.
An exit sign is a mandatory requirement in any place where people are working. This can be in a residential or industrial area. The purpose of these signs is to indicate the direction of egress from a building or premises.

These exit signs are usually placed at the end of hallways and corridors; however, they can also be found in stairwells, elevators and other places where people may need to use them.

There are many types of exit signs that can be used depending on your needs and the type of facility you are working with. There are also different types of exit signs that are used for different purposes depending on their location within the building or premises.

emergency exit or fire exit signs
This wording format is the old version of the exit sign. Before 1998 this format was useful, but somewhere you still see it is used to this day.

This version is in addition to the word format a running man pictogram and was an interim move towards the full pictogram sign. The meaning of this sign is very clear.

This version is a full pictogram only. A running man towards the exit from the existing building. This is still acceptable to use on existing sites.

This version of the exit sign is more descriptive than others.  This is actually some combination of the older and newer version. The descriptive text is an optional element of the sign and is not always required.

The format or version of exit signs is not important much more, it is important that you placed the sign in right place. So, let a check and make a snack list- is your exit signs working or not.

Features of an Exit Sign

Exit signs are required by law in many commercial and industrial places. These signs are used to direct people to safety or other exits. These exit signs have a lot of features that make them easy to use and understand.

The main features of an exit sign include:

1. A yellow triangle with the word “EXIT” in red letters above it.

2. A red arrow pointing at the exit sign, which is usually located at least 10 feet from the nearest wall of an exit corridor or doorway.

3. A white border around the sign, which indicates that it should be placed on walls with no interruptions of any kind (e.g., electrical wires).

4. The word “EXIT” must be displayed on both sides of the sign, indicating that it is a reversible sign (i.e., one side can display either “ENTER” or “EXIT”).

The exit sign requirement in industrial or commercial places is required by law. There are three different types of exit signs:

1. Emergency Exit Sign

2. Fire Exit Sign

3. Smoke Detectors

Emergency Exit Signs are used to indicate the location of an emergency exit, fire exit, and smoke detectors. They are also used to prevent someone from getting injured if they attempt to use the emergency exits without knowing where they are located. These signs must be posted at all emergency exits in buildings and workplaces, including doors, stairways, and elevators that lead out of the building. This sign should be located at least 18 inches (45 cm) above the floor level near each door or exit way which serves as an emergency exit or used as an alternate means of egress in case of fire or other emergency situations.

  3. It is often a serious offence as a building owner or landlord to not comply with the fire/building code in terms of Exit signage. In July 2016, for example, a fire in a Toronto apartment caused the death of one person and injured many others. An investigation found that Emergency and Exit lights were not properly illuminated, and the landlord was fined about $20,000 for "not properly illuminating exit signs, and having no record of emergency lighting tests and another $50,000 for other infractions to the code.
