What is Glacier?

A glacier is a large, long‑lived mass of ice that forms on land from compacted snow and slowly flows under its own weight; they are found in high mountains and polar regions, not in low‑lying Bangladesh — the nearest major glacier regions to Dhaka are the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges (Nepal, India, Pakistan).

Definition

  • What a glacier is: A glacier is a persistent body of dense ice that originates on land by the recrystallization of snow and shows evidence of past or present flow
  • Key physical trait: Glaciers move slowly by internal deformation and basal sliding, producing features such as crevasses, seracs, moraines, and fjords.

How glaciers form (stepwise)

  • Accumulation: Snowfall builds up year after year.
  • Compaction and recrystallization: Over decades to centuries, buried snow compresses into firn and then dense glacial ice.
  • Flow: Once thick enough, gravity causes the ice to deform and flow downhill or outward.

Main types

Why glaciers matter

  • Freshwater reservoir: Glacial ice stores a large share of Earth’s freshwater; together with ice sheets, glaciers hold about 69% of the planet’s freshwater.
  • Sea level and water supply: Melting glaciers contribute to sea‑level rise and affect seasonal water supplies for millions downstream.
  • Landscape shaping: Glaciers are powerful agents of erosion and deposition, carving valleys and forming lakes.

Where to see glaciers from Dhaka

  • Nearest major glacier regions: the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges (Nepal, northern India, Pakistan). Pakistan contains many glaciers outside the polar regions.

Current trends and risks

  • Retreat and loss: Many glaciers worldwide are retreating due to climate warming, reducing long‑term water security and accelerating sea‑level rise.

Next steps (pick one)

  • Want a simple infographic explaining formation and types? I can make a clean, labeled diagram.
  • Want a photorealistic glacier image (landscape or portrait) or a painterly/minimalist version? Tell me the style, orientation, and whether to include labels.
  • Want deeper reading or data (mass balance, regional retreat rates, or local glacier names near Dhaka)? I can pull recent studies and regional reports.
