Generally, an Earthing or Grounding Transformer is not a three-phase transformer, but a single-phase transformer with the primary (HV end) rated voltage equal to the system phase-to-neutral voltage and the secondary (LV end) rated voltage of either 240V or 11oV.

To avoid any switching transient in the Transformer primary of the transmission system, or a big noise may damage the Transformer. To avoid such spurious signal, grounding is provided in the primary. The grounding also affects third harmonics from the switching transient.

What is an Instrument Transformer and how does it work?

The Instrument transformers are the same as other conventional transformers, but different it is just high-accuracy class electrical devices. Instrument transformers are actually used to isolate or transform voltage or current levels for using metering or controlling signals. 

Operating the instruments for controlling the system or measuring the high-level voltage or current, the instrument transformers are used to decrease the voltage or current level to the measuring level for safely isolating secondary control circuitry from the high voltages or currents.

Transformer oil actually is insulating oil that has excellent stable electrical insulation properties at long-time high temperatures. Due to the mass use of this insulating oil in an electrical oil-filled transformer, it is commonly called transformer oil. Not only in transformers, but it is also used in high-voltage capacitors, oil circuit reclosers, high-voltage switches & circuit breakers, fluorescent lamp ballast, etc.
